Perimenopause 101: Why is everything hard?

Feeling off lately? Mood swings, poor sleep, low energy, weird periods, chin hair?? If you’re in your late 30s or 40s and wondering what’s going on with your body, this might be perimenopause — the hormonal rollercoaster that happens before menopause.

In this post, we’re breaking down the basics: what perimenopause is, when it starts, common symptoms, and how to know if you're in it.

No fear-mongering, no BS. Just real talk — the way we do it on Hysterical Women: the podcast.

What is perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transition phase before menopause, when your body starts to make less consistent levels of estrogen and progesterone. This hormonal flux can mess with everything from your sleep and mood to your cycle, libido, skin, and energy.

🩸 You can still have regular periods and be in perimenopause.
Let us say that louder for the people in the back: bleeding doesn’t mean you’re not in it. Your symptoms matter more than your calendar.

When does perimenopause start?

Often earlier than you think.

Most women start noticing changes in their early to mid‑40s, though it can begin in your late 30s. It typically lasts 4 to 8 years and ends when you’ve gone 12 months without a period — which is when you're officially in menopause.

Signs & symptoms of perimenopause

Here’s where things get fun (read: confusing and a little chaotic).
Hormonal changes during perimenopause can cause a wide range of physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms — many of which aren’t talked about enough.

✅ Common symptoms of perimenopause:

  • Mood swings — anxiety, irritability, PMS rage, even depression

  • Sleep disturbances — especially waking at 3 a.m. for no reason

  • Brain fog — poor concentration, forgetfulness, loss of motivation

  • Fatigue — even if you did sleep

  • Irregular periods — shorter, heavier, skipped, or just weird

  • Hot flashes and night sweats — not just for postmenopause

  • Low libido — and changes in sexual desire or sensation

  • Hair and skin changes — dryness, shedding, adult acne, texture shifts

  • New sensitivities — to alcohol, caffeine, or smells

  • Random chin hair — yep, she’s back

🧠 Mental health & perimenopause:

Increased anxiety and depression are often some of the first signs. Many women describe a feeling of “losing themselves” or “not recognizing their brain anymore.” You are not imagining it. Hormones are real.

How do I know if I’m in perimenopause?

Short answer: if you’re 40+ and experiencing 2 or more symptoms, it’s worth considering. You don’t need a blood test to confirm — this is a clinical diagnosis.

✅ Tests like FSH and estrogen can fluctuate wildly in perimenopause and may not give a clear answer.

Instead, track your symptoms + cycle pattern for a couple months and bring that to your care provider. Better yet, start with our Health Navigation Consult and let one of our Nurse Health Coaches guide you. Book Now

Is it normal to feel like everything is hard?

Totally. Your hormones are fluctuating daily, and your body is trying to compensate — all while you’re probably managing work, kids, aging parents, and your own high standards. It’s a lot. But we promise: it’s real, and it’s valid.

You’re not broken. You’re perimenopausal. And you deserve support.
