Frequently asked questions.
Is Coven Women's Health a replacement for my family doctor or primary care provider?
No. Coven Women's Health is designed to complement, not replace, the care you receive from your family physician or other specialists. We do not provide routine primary care, general physicals, or manage acute medical emergencies. We strongly encourage you to maintain a relationship with a primary care provider for your general health needs.
What does "OBGYN-led oversight" mean?
Our clinic benefits from the expert medical leadership of Dr. Michelle Jacobson, a leading OBGYN. She oversees our clinical protocols and provides guidance to our Nurse Practitioners, ensuring all our medical care is grounded in the highest standards and the latest evidence.
Is Coven only for menopause?
While menopause and perimenopause are core areas of our expertise, we support women experiencing a range of hormone-related conditions and transitions. This includes, but is not limited to, PCOS management, fertility optimization (non-procedural), and hereditary cancer risk assessment.
How does virtual care work at Coven?
All our consultations are conducted virtually via secure telehealth platforms, which may include video conferencing and secure messaging through Telus Health CHR Connect. You'll connect with your practitioners from the comfort of your home.
What technology do I need for virtual appointments?
You'll need a stable internet connection, a computer or mobile device with a camera and microphone, and access to our secure patient portal (Telus Health CHR Connect). We provide guidance on how to set this up.
What if I have a medical emergency?
Coven Women's Health is not an emergency service. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911 or your local emergency number immediately, or proceed to the nearest emergency department.
Is my personal health information secure with virtual care?
Yes. We utilize Telus Health CHR, a secure Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system built to meet rigorous Canadian privacy laws, including Ontario's Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA). Your data is encrypted and handled with the utmost confidentiality.
Are lab tests covered by OHIP?
Some lab tests recommended by our Nurse Practitioners may be covered by OHIP if deemed medically necessary under OHIP guidelines, but Coven Women's Health does not process OHIP claims for lab work. You would present your requisition to the lab, and they would bill OHIP directly.
Can I use my Extended Health Benefits or Health Spending Account?
Many of our services provided by Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Dietitians, and Registered Social Workers may be eligible for reimbursement through your Extended Health Benefits or Health Spending Account. We recommend checking your individual policy for specific coverage details. Coven Women's Health does not direct bill insurance companies (unless specifically outlined for a particular service).
Will my medications (hormonal or non-hormonal) be covered by OHIP or private insurance? *
OHIP Coverage: Generally, OHIP does not cover the cost of prescription medications for most adults in Ontario, unless you are eligible for specific programs like the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program (e.g., if you are 65+, receive Ontario Works/ODSP, or are enrolled in the Trillium Drug Program for high drug costs relative to income). Your Nurse Practitioner will discuss whether a prescription is typically covered by OHIP for eligible individuals, but Coven Women's Health does not guarantee OHIP coverage for medications.
Private Insurance/Extended Health Benefits: Many private insurance plans or employer-provided Extended Health Benefits (EHBs) do provide coverage for both hormonal and non-hormonal prescription medications. We strongly recommend you contact your individual insurance provider or plan administrator to confirm your specific drug coverage details, including any deductibles, co-pays, or annual maximums, before filling any prescriptions.
Coven's Role: Our Nurse Practitioners will provide you with a valid prescription. It is then your responsibility to present this prescription to your pharmacy and manage any associated costs or insurance claims.
If I don't have coverage, are hormonal or non-hormonal medications expensive in Ontario?
The cost of prescription medications in Ontario, if you do not have OHIP coverage (e.g., through ODB or OHIP+) or private insurance, can vary significantly.
Factors affecting cost: This depends heavily on whether a generic version is available (generics are usually much less expensive), the specific dosage, the quantity prescribed, and the pharmacy's dispensing fees.
How to find out exact costs: We strongly recommend contacting your preferred pharmacy directly with the name and dosage of the prescribed medication. They can provide you with the exact cost if you are paying out-of-pocket.
What is your cancellation policy?
To reschedule or cancel an appointment, we require at least 72 hours' notice. Late cancellations or no-shows may be charged the full session fee, as our practitioners dedicate specific time slots for your care. Please contact your practitioner or health coach to cancel or reschedule your appointment.
