Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is one of the most common—and most misunderstood—hormonal conditions affecting women. It is complex, life-disrupting, and too often under-diagnosed or poorly treated.

At Coven Women’s Health, we believe women with PCOS deserve earlier diagnosis, clearer answers, and long-term, multidisciplinary care—not dismissal, oversimplification, or one-size-fits-all advice.

PCOS SUPPORT

What is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder that affects up to 1 in 5 women.

It is a leading cause of infertility and is associated with an increased lifetime risk of:

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Endometrial (uterine) cancer

  • Metabolic dysfunction and insulin resistance

Despite how common it is, up to 70% of cases may be undiagnosed, and many women see multiple clinicians over many years before receiving a diagnosis—if they receive one at all.

PCOS is not a single disease with a single cause. It is a syndrome, meaning it can look very different from one woman to another.

Signs & Symptoms of PCOS

PCOS can show up in many ways. Common features include:

  • Irregular, infrequent, or absent menstrual cycles

  • Difficulty ovulating or conceiving

  • Acne or persistent adult acne

  • Excess facial or body hair (hirsutism)

  • Thinning scalp hair or male-pattern hair loss

  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight

  • Insulin resistance or prediabetes

  • Fatigue, brain fog, mood changes

If any of these sound familiar, you are not imagining things—and you deserve proper evaluation.

How PCOS Is Diagnosed

PCOS is typically diagnosed using the Rotterdam criteria, which require two of the following three:

  1. Irregular ovulation or menstrual cycles
    – Infrequent, unpredictable, or absent periods

  2. Hyperandrogenism (elevated androgens)
    – Diagnosed through blood work or physical signs such as acne, excess hair growth, or hair thinning

  3. Polycystic ovaries on ultrasound
    – 12+ follicles on one or both ovaries or increased ovarian volume
(Note: polycystic-appearing ovaries alone do not equal PCOS)

Early diagnosis matters. The longer PCOS goes unrecognised, the harder it can be to manage symptoms and reduce long-term health risks.

Who We Can Help

We support women who:

  • Have been diagnosed with PCOS and feel their care has been fragmented or incomplete

  • Suspect PCOS but have not received clear answers

  • Have been told to “just lose weight” or “come back when you want to get pregnant”

  • Want support beyond fertility—energy, hormones, metabolism, mood, skin, and long-term health

  • Are looking for evidence-based care that also honours their lived experience

You do not need to be trying to conceive to deserve excellent PCOS care.

  • They are common—but not normal—and should be investigated.

  • PCOS is a chronic condition, but symptoms and long-term risks can be effectively managed with the right care
